Cricket is a game in which one can get the attention in very
first game to become popular while the other player spends years to receive the
respect from the people. Popularity remained when a player is playing; when he retires
no one ask about him. While on the other hand a player who makes his place in
the hearts of the people last for long time. There are many examples of
cricketers who retired but still in the hearts of the fans, like Brian Lara,
Shane Warne, Kapil Dev, Wasim Akram and many others.
Rahul Dravid is one of those cricketers whose name is alive in the hearts of the cricket lovers. He is one of the successful cricketers that India has produced, a player who didn't allow any bowler to put his terror on him. He was a type of player whenever his team needed him he performed and won matches for his team. No matter whether he was playing with young side or old guns, he performed consistently and led his team to victory position.
Every cricketer who made unique place has given a title which also becomes the identity of that player, so as a title "The Wall" is labeled with Rahul Dravid. Dravid received this title for his unique style of batting, standing like a wall not allowing a bowler to get his wickets whether he was playing on batting or green pitch. Although Dravid was given the title in test cricket but it doesn't mean that he wasn't a suitable player in other formats of cricket.
Rahul Dravid had played 164 test matches, he scored 13288 runs with an average of 42.51, his highest score was 270 runs. Dravid was one of the best cricketer when it comes to test cricket, he always showed availability to play at any position and satisfied his captain and fans with his performance. His 36 hundreds in test cricket along with 63 runs is a wide book for the cricket lovers.
Although Dravid was labelled with test cricket but he also proved his class when it comes to ODI and T20 cricket. He played 344 ODI matches in which he scored 10889 runs with an average of 39.16, his strike rate in ODI cricket was 71.24. The Wall made 12 hundreds in ODI cricket along with 83 fifties, while his best score in ODI cricket was 153 runs. Although in T20 International Dravid only played one game but impressed the fans, he scored 31 runs with a strike rate of 147.61 which is again an answer to those people who said that Dravid is not a T20 or ODI player.
"The Wall" never becomes selfish with the records he had and played like a common player. He never showed his star power but supports the selector’s decision whether they ignored him or add him to the squad. Dravid was a type of player who kept himself away from the arguments with other teams’ player; he always tried to resolve the dispute amongst the players. That's why he had good relations with the opposite team players; even players like Steve Waugh, Brian Lara and Inzimam-ul-Haq respected him when he was playing against their teams.
Rahul Dravid is one of the best cricketers ever, many cricket legends gave him the title of "Legend" in cricket, and unfortunately he didn't receive this title officially which was his right to get so. With his announcement of retirement cricket will lose attentions, also he will be missed by India team which is going under difficult trials. Cricket will produce more cricketers but it will be hard to find a classic player like Rahul Dravid to give cricket its own identity.
Same like Rahul Dravid, finally it's time to finish my article with Rahul Dravid last speech to media during his announcement,
"Finally, I would like to thank the Indian cricket fan, both here and across the world. The game is lucky to have you and I have been lucky to play before you. To represent India, and thus to represent you, has been a privilege and one which I have always taken seriously. My approach to cricket has been reasonably simple: it was about giving everything to the team, it was about playing with dignity, and it was about upholding the spirit of the game. I hope I have done some of that. I have failed at times, but I have never stopped trying. It is why I leave with sadness but also with pride."
Looking forward for your feedback.
