In the final group game of the Asia Cup 2012, Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by
five wickets and has qualified for the final battle. Bangladesh’s historical
victory marked a sad day for India, As They’re out of the tournament.
After submitting two big wins in a row against India and Sri Lanka, Bangladesh has secured the final berth. It was only the second time they had reached the finals of a one-day tournament. When Bangladesh Captain won the toss today and decided to field first. Everyone was surprised on his decision but Bangladesh bowlers did an amazing job and restricted Sri Lanka to 232 total.
The Duckworth-Lewis system handed them the revised target. Bangladesh chased down a rain-revised 212 with 17 balls to spare. Tamim Iqbal’s batting on a spiced-up pitch gave their chase a kick-start. The Bangladesh middle order withstood the pressure and gave the expectant crowd a reason to show up in similar numbers for the final, on Thursday, March 22.
Shakib-ul-Hasan’s battle with Senanayake was a compelling one. Shakib has been involved in three of the top five partnerships. Shakib, after passing a tough test against some short bowling, settled in and crashed Suranga Lakmal for three consecutive boundaries through the off side. Tamim reached his half-century with a clip for four off Farveez Maharoof, and his pleasing strokeplay won the applause of the country's premier Sheikh Hasina, also in attendance.
The young talent Nasir Hossain (36 not out) and Mahmudullah (32 not out) took some time to consolidate, but ultimately it was their unbeaten 77-run partnership that took Bangladesh home. They kept out the inswinging yorkers. They didn’t panic when they played the ball to the fielders, did the right thing on right time, and calmly picked up singles. Tillakaratne Dilshan was brought on after the quick failed to take wickets, but the pair didn't change their approach.
Pakistan topped the league with nine points from three matches, followed by Bangladesh (8/3), India (8/3) and Sri Lanka (0/3). The hosts made it to the final as they beat India in their league match. The last group match of the Asia Cup ended a mixed season for a travel-weary Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s defeat also affected India as with their defeat, India has knocked-out of the tournament. Not too long ago, India were in their hotel rooms in Brisbane, hoping for a Sri Lankan defeat to push them into the CB Series finals. This time, in a hotel not far from the ground, India were ironically hoping for a Sri Lankan win. Sri Lanka couldn’t win a single match throughout the Asia Cup Tournament.
Bangladesh, who earlier dismissed Sri Lanka for 232, will play Pakistan in the final on Thursday, with five-times champions India out of the tournament despite finishing level on points with Bangladesh. India paid the price for their shock defeat by Bangladesh which sent them out on the teams' head-to-head record. It was eighth time in Asia and the second time in multi-team tournaments in the subcontinent that Sri Lanka have failed to win a single match.
Shakib-ul-Hasan was named Man Of The Match. He is excited and looking forward to the final. "I can't understand what my feelings are," said overjoyed man of the match Shakib. "Of course when I talk to the team mates I will realise what this is. I am very excited, very happy because we don't usually achieve such things," he added
Bangladesh Captain Mushfiqur Rahim said, “The final is one of the biggest achievements in our cricketing history. Hopefully, We will cross that hurdle. It is a great boost to have the crowd supporting you”
